As coffee prices skyrocket, local coffee shops struggle with financial burden

WASHINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — Coffee lovers are in for a rude awakening as coffee prices are on the rise.

“Coffee is, on the world market, it’s the second-largest commodity. It’s traded next to petroleum,” said Yvonne Andresen.

Andresen is the owner of The Blend in Washington. She said she first noticed a spike in prices back in April 2021.

“It soared to a five-year high,” Andresen said.

Coffee shop headed for Pullman corner | Local

The corner of Pullman’s Main Street and Grand Avenue was a popular destination for coffee lovers when Cafe Moro operated there for 15 years.

In August, a year after Cafe Moro closed, a new coffee shop will move into that same building with the hope of being a convenient and welcoming place for people to enjoy their favorite brew.

Immanuel Montelongo said he expects to open Manny’s Coffee House on Aug. 7.

Local Eats: New coffee shop brings specialty drinks to Grand Rapids neighborhood

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A new coffee shop is opening in Grand Rapids’ Creston neighborhood.

Sparrows Coffee opened at a location inside Kingma’s Market, 2225 Plainfield Ave. NE, on Thursday, June 24. The full-service coffee shop has indoor seating for 14 people and offers a wide selection of drinks including lattes and cortados, espresso, drip coffee, cold brew coffee and more.

“We want people to take a break from their hectic routine and be able to just hang out and have a coffee and feel relaxed,” said Tim Volkema, CEO of Sparrows Coffee and its parent company, Schuil Coffee.
